They were not only of different nationalities and different classes, but also of different faiths; among them were Catholics and freethinkers, Buddhist and Quaker. They opposed war in peaceful societies and in political life as humanitarians and defenders of human rights. This small group of nine laureates represents the different paths to peace that Norwegian Nobel committees have recognised over the years. But they are most interesting in their own right; each has a compelling story to tell.
